Telecommunication Services

The Telecommunication facilities are open to outside clients. For details of charges and how to book facilities, see Who to contact.

Video conferencing

ETC has state-of-the-art video conferencing facilities which use ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) for transmission. The video conferencing unit can link to anywhere in the world which has ISDN access. A video conference allows participants to see and hear each other at all times during a conference. Conferences can be point-to-point (one site connected to one other site) or multi pointed (up to eight sites connected at the same time with automatic switching between sites). ETC has two systems - a room system and a desktop system.
Room System

The space for the room system at ETC can hold up to 20 people per conference. However a maximum of 10 people is a more comfortable number for each conference.

A document camera, VHS video player and DOS computer are connected to the system so that printed documents, photographs, video tapes and computer presentations can be used during conferences. Fax messages can also be sent from the video conference room, which is on the ground floor of the ETC building.

Desktop System

This system is based on a DOS computer and is designed for one-to-one communication. That is, one person is seated at a computer linked to other computer desktop systems. Computer files can be shared and participants can work jointly on a computer application at the same time. An image of each person appears on a variable-sized box on the computer screen.

Video conferences can be used for such communication needs as meetings with external assessors, colloquia, teaching and training sessions, job interviews and so on.

Audio conferencing

Audio (or telephone) conference is similar to video conferencing except that it is a voice-only conference which is transmitted via the telephone rather than ISDN. Therefore audio conferences can be held with anyone who is contactable by telephone, anywhere in the world.

ETC has an excellent quality conferencing telephone in the video conferencing room on the ground floor. Fax message can be sent during a conference.
