CIBFM WORKSHOP SERIES 5 & 6

FOREIGN EXCHANGE TRADING:
ISLAMIC & CONVENTIONAL PERSPECTIVES

Introducing a new approach to understanding foreign exchange from both Islamic and conventional perspectives

7-9 AUGUST 2007
21-23 AUGUST 2007

Foreign exchange (FOREX or Fx) is the simultaneous buying of one currency and selling of another. The foreign exchange market is the largest financial market in the world, with a volume of over US$1.5 trillion daily; an amount which is more than three times the volume of US equity and Treasury markets combined!

In the past, the only way to gain access to foreign exchange market was through banks that transact large amounts of currencies for commercial and investment purposes. Today, we can trade in the comfort of our home. We must, however, be aware of the pitfalls of foreign exchange that can take us to slippery grounds and may result in us losing a considerable amount of our hard earned money! To trade in the foreign exchange market, you must first start with a good strategy.

For these reasons, the Centre for Islamic Banking, Finance and Management (CIBFM) will be conducting two courses in foreign exchange. The first 3-day workshop is meant for junior treasury personnel, non-treasury and the general public who wish to acquire practical and technical understanding of the foreign exchange market and its basic operations. If you are successful in completing this course, you will be able to understand the structure and basic operations of the foreign exchange market. You will also be confident to track the movements of Fx rates, and understand how to read and interpret the prices. Live rates of major world currencies will be made available during workshop sessions to enable participants to actively trade the currencies and make assessments of the profitability and risks.

Although we see the benefits of trading in foreign exchange, we have to be aware of the Shariah implications. What are the fundamentals of Islamic FOREX? Knowing the Islamic perspective to foreign exchange is important in order for us to understand the ‘halalness’ of trading in foreign exchange. The second 3-day workshop facilitates the understanding of the current Islamic concept applied for the operations of Islamic foreign exchange.
