Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) marked the change of leadership of the UBD Students’ Association (PMUBD) by appointing members of the new Student Representative Council for 2016/2017 in a ceremony held at the Inspiring Hall, UBD Student Centre. The same ceremony also saw the official dissolution of the Student Representative Council 2015/2016.
Present as the Guest of Honour to officiate the dissolution and new appointment of the Student Representative Council was Hjh Rubiah Hj Yacub, Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor (Corporate & Administration) and Registrar & Secretary of UBD.
The Dean of Students, Saidai Hj Hitam, in his welcoming address, thanked the former Student Representative Council and acknowledged their service, contribution and sacrifice towards the development of PMUBD and the realisation of PMUBD’s vision and mission, in line with that of UBD.
The former Council members were then presented with a token of appreciation by the guest of honour after a farewell speech from their former president, Muhammad Khairuddin Ishak.
The new Student Representative Council was then officially introduced to the audience before taking their oath as the new council. Both the presidents then sat down for an official handover of duties, witnessed by the guest of honour. The ceremony ended with a speech by the new president, Mohammad Ashmeer S/O Imtiaz Ahmad, and a group photo session.
The Student Representative Council election campaign is held annually. This year, it started in early October where successful nominees had to go through a four-day Leadership Course before they can elect and vote among themselves on who will hold the available posts.
The course included, among other things, an introduction to the function of the Student Affairs Section, PMUBD and the Council, and how collectively they work together to support the strategic initiatives of UBD. In addition, they also learned about the PMUBD Constitution, leadership qualities, administrative procedures of UBD as well as financial procedures and regulations. Teambuilding activities at Berakas Forest Reserve Beach were also arranged as part of the course to strengthen their bond as a team.
This appointment will give the students first-hand experience and exposure on how student leadership operates in a university setting and to develop relevant soft skills within their posts, before embarking as future leaders of the nation.
