The very first Stock Pitch Competition, hosted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE), yesterday witnessed four groups of students delivering their presentations in a bid to convince the judges to buy or sell a selected stock.
The Stock Pitch Competition, which aims at enhancing the financial literacy and understanding of equity investments amongst UBD students, is part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by UBD and State Street in April 2016. The MoU formalises cooperation in various programmes, including the competition, a series of lectures by State Street’s executives, and internship opportunities at State Street’s Brunei office.
Close collaboration between UBD and key industry players, such as State Street, also aims to enhance the skillset and general quality of UBD students prior to joining the workforce.
The competition judges include Mr Edmund Teo from State Street Brunei, Mr Gordon Clarke from AMBD and Pg Dr Hj Md Hasnol Alwee Bin Pg Hj Md Salleh from UBDSBE.
Edmund Teo from State Street commented that, “State Street is proud to support the Stock Pitch Competition and witness first-hand the progress the students have made throughout. They have displayed good knowledge overall and were able to present confidently to the panel of judges."
State Street is encouraged by the success of this competition specifically by meeting the goals of increasing the students’ knowledge of the capital markets and overall financial literacy. Mr Edmund also hopes that the experience from this stock competition will improve the students' employability in the future.
Concluding the Stock Pitch Competition, Dean of UBDSBE, Professor Ahmed Masood Khalid gave a few words of encouragement to students “There is no loser in this Stock Pitch Competition as the experience students gained will be invaluable”. Prizes will be awarded to the winning group in an upcoming event.
The UBD-State Street Brunei MoU is the latest in a series of active collaborations between UBD and universities and institutions around the world spanning six continents. State Street Corporation (NYSE: STT) is one of the world's leading providers of financial services to institutional investors, including investment servicing, investment management and investment research and trading. With US$27 trillion in assets under custody and administration and US$2 trillion in assets under management as of March 31, 2016, State Street operates in more than 100 geographic markets worldwide, including the US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
