Universiti Brunei Darussalam held its 28th Convocation to celebrate the graduating students of 2016 at UBD’s Chancellor’s Hall today. The ceremony was graced by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
This year saw 1,477 graduates from the fourth batch of UBD’s distinctive GenNEXT programme, with 28 PhD graduates, surpassing last year’s record of 20. The total number of graduating students also comprises 481 Master holders, 893 Bachelor graduates and 62 Diploma, and 13 Advanced/Graduate Diploma recipients. The 28th Convocation also saw the graduation of 109 international students in UBD.
Graduates of the PhD and Bachelors programmes received their certificates during the morning session, while graduates of Masters, Postgraduate Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Diploma programmes received their certificates in the afternoon.
This year’s Convocation Exhibition showcases UBD’s new Strategic Plan 2016 - 2020, featuring its strategic goals and plans for the next four years to empower future leaders through innovative education and enterprising research. Using augmented reality technology, the exhibition showcases ongoing research projects that embrace the UBD’s new innovative and progressive directions to meet the needs and demands of the local and global population.
UBD was ranked the top university in Asia for student mobility in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Ranking for two consecutive years. UBD was positioned number 1 in outbound students, and number 3 in inbound students. Overall, UBD was ranked 123rd top university in Asia. The university is positioned at 11th for international faculty, 13th for faculty student ratio, and 17th for international students – making it top 20 in Asia in five categories.
A Convocation Festival is being held until 22nd October in conjunction with the Convocation Ceremony. Themed “Success through Harmony, Knowledge and Resilience”, the event showcased leading-edge projects by current and graduating students that are expected to contribute towards Brunei’s economy and future developments while supporting ASEAN integration. In addition, the Convo Run and Cycle event will also be held on 23rd October to commemorate the graduation of the Class of 2016.
