story

The 13th International Summer Medical School (ISMS) was officiated on 25th July 2019 at the Extension Building of PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences (IHS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The ceremony welcomed five Japanese students from Kagawa University's Faculty of Medicine who will be participating in five-week programme where they will experience snippets of academic life at UBD's PAPRSB IHS through lectures, problem-based learning tutorials, and clinical visits to Brunei Government Ministry of Health's establishments. With their counterparts in PAPRSB IHS, this year's participants will be focusing on non-communicable diseases, particularly cancer and hypertension.

The students will also be practicing their use of the English language, and have the opportunity to forge friendships with UBD students as well as members of the Brunei-Japan Friendship Association (BJFA). In addition, the ISMS programme takes care of student welfare and cultural enrichment via homestays with foster families, outdoor activities at Tasek Lama Park and in Temburong district, as well as visits to the Arts & Handicraft Centre, Golden Jubilee Park, Kampong Ayer (Water Village), Kuala Belait Town, Maritime Museum and Royal Regalia Museum.

Officiating the 13th installment of the programme was the Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam His Excellency Motohiko Kato. Also present at the ceremony were the Dean of PAPRSB IHS Dr Hajah Rafidah Awang Haji Gharif, accompanying professors from the Faculty of Medicine at Kagawa University as well as staff and students of PAPRSB IHS.

"The Japanese Government believes that the future of our bilateral relations rests on the shoulders of the young people of our two countries," His Excellency said during the ceremony. "Among those many programmes, the exchange programme between UBD and Kagawa University is one of the longest-running youth exchange programmes between Brunei and Japan. I believe that this exchange programme provides a golden opportunity to further develop mutual understanding between Japanese and Bruneian youths."

UBD and Kagawa University have always had a close working relationship which began with the first ISMS back in July 2006. The 13th ISMS represents a continuous and fruitful partnership between universities in Brunei Darussalam and Japan.
