UBD Receives Artwork Donation From HSBC

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) received a donation of paintings and portraits from Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Brunei on 23rd May 2018.

The artworks were handed over by Graham FitzGerald, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Brunei to Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor of UBD at Simpur Cafe in the presence of principal officers and staff of UBD.

The artworks included framed watercolour paintings of Kampong Ayer and framed copies of the original portraits of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Chancellor of UBD, Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien ibni Sultan Sir Muhammad Jamalul Alam II and; as well as a framed picture print of His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, The Crown Prince and Pro Chancellor of UBD.

The largest artwork donated was a framed painting of The Rainforest Project "Up River" by Boyd and Evans and is said to be one of the few paintings in the world by the pair. In 1991, the husband-and-wife team of Fionnuala Boyd and Les Evans participated in an expedition organised by UBD and the Royal Geographic Society to Ulu Temburong where the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre (KBFSC) now stands. Datin Dr Hajah Anita in her remarks said that the particular artwork is special as it is "more than a beautiful painting" but reflects KBFSC's role and especially UBD's strength in biodiversity research owing to Brunei Darussalam's vast and pristine flora and fauna.
