UBD Holds Discovery Year Showcase 2018

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) through the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) held the Discovery Year Showcase 2018 at the Inspiring Hall, Student Centre in UBD.

Officiating the Discovery Year Showcase 2018 was Associate Professor Dr Mohd Ayub Sadiq, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs). Also present at the opening ceremony were principal officers, staff and students of UBD.

The two-day event held from 19th to 20th February 2018 showcases the work, experience, learning achievements and talents of UBD students who have undergone their Discovery Year. It is a great opportunity for students who are about to take part in their Discovery year to learn from their experienced peers. This is also an opportunity for them to learn about other disciplines apart from their own, in the hopes that more multidisciplinary activities and projects will take place in the future. Parents and guardians have the opportunity to witness how GenNEXT students are shaped into well-rounded future leaders through experiential learning activities.

With the aim of producing "Future Ready" graduates, the GenNEXT curriculum is a student-centric approach to education that lays the foundation for life-long learning. It equips students with essential life skills and soft skills, namely critical thinking, reasoning, communication, quantitative analysis with both a national and global perspective. Principles embedded in all GenNEXT modules are Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Innovation, and Environmental Awareness.

The GenNEXT curriculum offers experiential learning through the Discovery Year programme during the students' third year candidature. Under the programme, students have a choice of one or a mix of the four choices: Study Abroad programme, Internship, Incubation project and Community Outreach Project. "The options provided within the Discovery Year programme encourages UBD students to be independent, proactive and courageous in their pursuit of knowledge and skills because these are relevant in shaping their future career pathways," Dr Malai Haniti Sheikh Abdul Hamid, Director of Studies at the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) said in her welcoming remarks during the opening ceremony.

Organised for the second consecutive year, the Discovery Showcase 2018 continues to feature participation from some of UBD's international partner universities, local private sector and student vendors. One of the main objectives of having the participating exhibitors is to connect UBD and its stakeholders with industry needs.
