UBD Awards 83 with University Medals and Book Prizes

Universiti Brunei Darussalam honoured the achievements of its excellent students at the University Medal and Book Prize Awards Ceremony on 19th September 2017, held in conjunction with the recent 29th Convocation. Present as the guest of honour was the Minister of Health, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Zulkarnain Haji Hanafi in his capacity as UBD Council Member.

In her opening remarks, Vice Chancellor of UBD Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz congratulated the students on their achievements and hoped that the recipients will continue to be inspired to achieve greatness in the fields they choose to pursue. "It is hoped that their experience in UBD has not only developed the students holistically through the instilling of emotional, social and intellectual values but also helped to prepare them to be future ready," she said.

"The world of employment is constantly changing and graduates have to realise that personal and professional development is a life long journey," she added. "In addition, graduates also have to instill characteristics that lean towards developing communities and contribute to nation building."

A total of 96 medals, Book Prizes, and Excellence Awards were awarded to 83 students during the ceremony, five of whom were recipients of the coveted University Silver Medal Award. The Silver Medalists are Ismayah Haji Mohd Noor @ Haji Sulaiman (Bachelor of Arts), Claudia Celestine Loh (Bachelor of Science), Hajah Noraini Haji Mohd Rafee (Bachelor of Health Sciences), Muhammad Ali Iskandar Mohammad Ali (Bachelor of Business) and Yap Ai Hui (Bachelor of Engineering).

Amongst the recipients of the University Book Prize, 11 students and 68 students from Master's Degree and Bachelor's Degree programmes respectively received the prestigious award for their outstanding performance. Of the 66 Bachelor's Degree Book Prize recipients, 26 were recipients for level 4000 and 5000 (majors), 25 for level 2000 and 3000 (majors) and 15 for level 1000 (majors). One student received the Book Prize for her outstanding performance in the Melayu Islam Beraja module and another student received the Book Prize for her outstanding performance in the Bachelor of Health Sciences programme (major: Medicine).

In addition, seven students received Excellence Awards from Brunei LNG for being top achievers in their programmes, and one student received the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Best Student Award. Meanwhile, Excellence Awards were also given to four high-performing Diploma students currently in their final year.
