Universiti Brunei Darussalam held its 29th Convocation to celebrate the graduating students of 2017 at UBD's Chancellor's Hall on 7th September 2017. The ceremony was graced by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
This year saw 1,308 graduates from the fifth batch of UBD's distinctive GenNext programme, with 36 PhD graduates, surpassing last year's record of 28. The total number of graduating students also comprises 346 Master holders, 827 Bachelor graduates as well as 1 Advanced Diploma and 98 Diploma recipients. The 29th Convocation also saw the graduation of 66 international students in UBD.
Graduates of the PhD and Bachelor programmes received their certificates during the morning session,while graduates of Masters, Postgraduate Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Diploma programmes received their certificates in the afternoon.
This year's Convocation Exhibition showcased UBD's innovative and blended teaching with emphasis on lifelong learning and entrepreneurship that embrace UBD's progressive steps towards meeting the needs and demands of the local and global population. It highlighted the institution's educational achievements and future goals by showcasing three initiatives: The Global Classroom, Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) Programmes, and Entrepreneurship Education.
The global classroom began in 2012 by PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences and offers simultaneous video-conferencing links with eight universities in Asia, including UBD, National University of Singapore, Seoul National University, National Taiwan University, University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Japan, United Nations University in Malaysia, Mahidol University in Thailand and Kagawa University in Japan. Drawing experts from various fields in the partner universities, and with around 200 international participants, the programme allows for real time participation, communication and round table discussions. Dr Nik Anni Tuah from PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences demonstrated the global classroom with a lecture titled "Diabetes in Brunei Darussalam and Kagawa, Japan" for students of the Masters in Public Health programme and PhD in Public Health. It was a simulation of real-time interaction between UBD's Dr Sharima Sharbini and Dr Akran Hossain from Kagawa University in Japan.
The second exhibition focused on the latest programmes offered by the Centre for Lifelong Learning (C3L) in UBD. Presented by Director of C3L Dr Abdal-Hakim @ Glenn Hardaker and Deputy Director of C3L Dr Annie Dayani Hj Ahad, the exhibition showcased an online learning session that demonstrated their innovative digital approach to teaching and learning. C3L uses a unique blended learning style that mixes traditional face-to-face teaching who;e giving students an engaging online learning experience. In January, C3L offered 14 new short courses catered for anybody regardless of background and experience, successfully enrolling over 200 students. From August 2017, C3L launched the Masters in Government which is a professional programme focusing on understanding the workings and challenges of an Islam-driven system of government.
Head of Entrepreneurship Village, Adna Shatriremie Hj A Abd Rahman presented the last exhibit on Entrepreneurship Education. In its aspiration to become the leading university of innovation and enterprise, UBD has pioneered an innovative learning pedagogy strategy embedding prominent entrepreneurial traits within the curriculum throughout all modules regardless of their disciplines. This ensures graduates develop solid entrepreneurial behaviour and thinking, encouraging self-reliance and independence and ultimately improving their employability.
UBD was ranked 349th in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Ranking, placing it among the top 1.3% of universities worldwide. In the QS Top 50 Under 50, UBD was placed 37th among universities founded less than 50 years ago.
The Convocation Festival, in conjunction with the Convocation Ceremony, is a month-long celebration of UBD graduates' success and includes various activities and events. Themed "Youths are the Catalyst of Transformation for a Successful Future", the launch of the Convocation Festival or "Pesta Konvo" on 4th September showcased 13 innovative and creative projects by current and graduating students as well as UBD alumni that show constructive ideas of youth, courage in involving themselves in various fields and industries as well as their spirit in innovating the country and shaping the country's future.
