In its annual grand celebration of the Convocation, the UBD Pesta Konvo 2017 kicked off on 4th September 2017 with a showcase of innovative and creative student and alumni projects and entrepreneurial endeavours at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam Sports Complex.
The month-long festival was officially launched by His Royal Highness Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Pro Chancellor of UBD. The opening ceremony was also attended by the UBD Council Members; Deputy Minister of Education, Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar; Vice-Chancellor of UBD, Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti POKLWDSS Hj Awg Abdul Aziz; foreign dignitaries and prominent officials from government agencies.
This year's Pesta Konvo theme "Youths are the Catalyst of Transformation for a Successful Future" echoed in the exhibitions at the UBD Sports Complex. This year's theme showcases 13 innovative and creative projects by current and graduating students as well as UBD alumni that show constructive ideas of youth, courage in involving themselves in various fields and industries as well as their spirit in innovating the country and shaping the country's future.
Organised by the Student Affairs Section and UBD Students' Association, with the assistance from the Office of Promotion and Events Management (OPEM), Pesta Konvo hosts a variety of exhibitions to celebrate the success of its current and graduating students. The exhibition in the UBD Sports Complex is open to the public until 6th September. Some of the highlights include the UBD Flyer 1000 from Centre for Advanced Materials and Energy Sciences (CAMES), B.Notepad from UBD School of Business and Economics, the Audio Pendant from Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT) and the Program Intervensi Pendidikan (PIP) from Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE). The exhibition also showcases the evolution of the UBD Shell Eco-Marathon cars, which have won a number of awards.
The opening ceremony also saw the presentation of Pesambah, handmade by a UBD alumni, from the Student Representative Council of UBD Students' Association (PMUBD) to His Royal Highness the Crown Prince.
Among other things, the Khatam Al-Quran and thanksgiving prayer was also held on 30th August to bless the graduating students in their future endeavours, Majlis Ibadah Korban dan Aqiqah in conjunction with the Aidiladha 1438 celebration will be held on 5th September, sports competitions, PMUBD Carnival as well as other cultural events.
The Pesta Konvo is held yearly in the run-up to the Convocation Ceremony to celebrate UBD graduates' success and achievements while showcasing ideas and creations by its current and graduating students. Each year, Pesta Konvo brings different themes and exhibitions of students' works to reflect their respective themes. The 29th Convocation Ceremony is scheduled to take place on 7th September at the Chancellor Hall, in which graduates will receive their scrolls.
