In conjunction with the 43rd birthday of His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah Ibni His Majesty Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and University Technology Brunei (UTB), the three institutions of higher learning jointly organised the Varsity Cycle event on 19th February 2017.
Over 200 cyclists made up of staff and students were flagged off by the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education, Dr Hj Azman Ahmad. Gracing the event was Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pg Anak Isteri Pg Anak Sarah Pg Hj Salleh Ab Rahaman. Also participating in the event were the Vice Chancellor of UBD, Dation Dr Hjh Anita Binurul Zahrina Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Hj Awang Abdul Aziz; Rector of UNISSA, Dr Hj Norarfan Hj Zainal; and the Vice Chancellor of UTB, Professor Dr Hjh Zohrah Hj Sulaiman.
The 43km route began from the UTB compound, as cyclists made their way on a route along the Tungku Highway to a pitsop in Bandar Seri Begawan hosted by UNISSA. After passing through the crowds involved in various activities during Bandarku Ceria, the participants made their way towards the Muara-Tutong Highway to their final destination at The Core, UBD.
As part of the cycling event, a donation drive was also jointly organised by all three institutes for DANA Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah to benefit orphans. Given the success of the event, this may not be the last collaboration between the three institutions' for the Varsity Cycle.
