About 20 lecturers and PhD students attended the inaugural SPARC Conversation on Research in Education organised by the SHBIE Publication and Research Club (SPARC) on 4th and 5th January 2017.
The two days lined up a total of five workshops and 17 five-minute talks, aimed at bringing together postgraduate students doing educational research as well as academics who are interested in sharing not only research but also the experience of going through the journey of postgraduate research studies.
The first day saw a forum titled "Embarking on The Journey: Challenges, Struggles and Motivation" featuring three speakers at different stages of their PhD. The panel took turns giving useful hints and tips, while sharing their valuable experience with participants.
SPARC was established with the sole purpose of supporting Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) academics and students in research and publication, providing a safe platform to share and discuss research and ways forward in advancing education to another level. SHBIE is a Graduate Faculty in Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). The premier teacher training institute in Brunei Darussalam, it comprises an international faculty of educational professionals with extensive overseas and local teaching and research experience representing a comprehensive range of expertise. SHBIE’s research strength is in design-based research in education, which involves the creation, enactment, and refinement of educational tools - curricular materials and instructional strategies – and the development of explanatory frameworks about the process of learning and the factors that support it.
UBD continuously strives towards becoming a research active university. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in research funding and infrastructure development. In parallel, many active research projects and productive international collaborations have been initiated.
