UBD held a flag-raising ceremony on 9th February at the Chancellor Hall lawn to mark Brunei Darussalam’s 32nd National Day.
The university’s newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Datin Dr Dayang Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz was present as the guest of honour to officiate the flag-hoisting ceremony.
The national flag was handed over to Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina, after which the national anthem of Brunei Darussalam was played and sung by all in attendance as the flag was raised. This was then followed by the singing of “Berkibarlah Bendera” (translated to Wave Your Flag). Like everywhere else in the country, the flag in this ceremony was the first of many flags which would soon be flying all across the campus.
The ceremony was attended by Principal Officers of UBD, academic and administrative staff, local and international students at the institution. The increasing numbers of local and international students at the university continue to take keen interest in national celebrations such as this, in order to gain full cultural immersion of studying in Brunei Darussalam.
The ceremony was held to reflect the strong sense of patriotism felt by the university’s staff and students. The flag is the outward sign of the patriotic feelings in the hearts of those at the ceremony and others throughout the university. Both local Bruneians and foreign students and staff are united in celebrating this proud anniversary for the country.
