Dear Colleagues,

We wish to extend a warm welcome to you to join us at the World Association of Lesson Studies International Conference 2010 (WALS 10).

Lesson Study is now seen in many parts of the world as an effective approach to teacher development and the improvement of learning.  The strength of Lesson Study is its engagement of teachers in collaboration to improve teaching and learning.

Last year the WALS 09 Conference was organized in Hong Kong, with around 400 practitioners, academics and researchers from 16 countries including Japan, USA, UK, Singapore, Sweden, China and many others.  They presented, reflected on and reviewed their practice and research findings on Lesson and Learning Studies at the Conference. It proved to be an enlivening experience with eager participants sharing invaluable insights and challenging and refining existing views on Lesson Study and its outcomes.

This year we are very pleased to announce that WALS 10 will be held by the World Association of Lesson Studies in Brunei Darussalam in December 2010 with the support of Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam.

The theme for the forthcoming conference is From Lesson and Learning Study to Teaching Design . It reflects our belief that lesson and learning study have an important contribution to make to the development of explanatory frameworks for learning and to the creation and refinement of tools for the design of teaching.

On behalf of the WALS 10 Organising Committee, we would like to welcome your participation in WALS 10. We need your contribution to build on the remarkable success of WALS in the past four years. For further information, please write to us at wals@ubd.edu.bn. We look forward to welcoming you to Brunei.
