The Department of English Language & Applied Linguistics (Faculty of Arts & Social Science) offers an English Language Studies BA degree programme that includes three strands: Linguistics, Communication and Literature. The courses taught in the programme include, among others, Communication & Context, The Mass Media, Drama Studies, Genre Analysis, The Sound System of English and Sociology of Language.

The Department also contributes Applied Linguistics courses to a BA (Education) TESL programme offered by the Faculty of Education. These courses include Language Acquisition, Discourse Analysis, Semantics, Pragmatics, Stylistics and Bilingualism.

At postgraduate level, the Department offers MA programmes in Applied Linguistics by coursework and research and by research only, and a PhD programme.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates with specialisations in the area of Communication who should be able to teach courses in Communication as well as (Applied) Linguistics or Literature. (In addition, the appointed candidates may be asked to contribute to EAP/ESP courses under the direction of the Language Centre.)

Applicants should have a PhD or Masters in Communication/Applied Linguistics or other relevant fields, and a minimum of five years’ teaching experience in a relevant field, including a minimum of three years at tertiary level. A strong commitment to research and a good publication record will be an advantage.

The annual salary range as follows:-

Lecturer	BD$ 33,720 – BD$ 50,880
Senior Lecturer	BD$ 55,200 – BD$ 62,400
Associate Professor	BD$ 64,800
Professor	BD$ 70,800

Academic allowances as follows:-

Lecturer (without PhD)	BD$ 300.00 per month
Lecturer (with PhD)	BD$ 500.00 per month
Senior Lecturer	BD$ 600.00 per month
Associate Professor	BD$ 800.00 per month
Professor	BD$ 1000.00 per month

Other benefits:

1. Bonus [1 month salary for lecturer/Senior Lecturer, 1/2 month salary for Associate Professor/Professor] after each 12 months of satisfactory service.
2. Gratuity [25% of last drawn salary x 36 months at the end of the contract].
