Examination

Regulations

For First Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma And Certificate Programmes

Registration Status
  1. All students in full-time or part-time programmes covered by these Regulations are required to register as a student in the University at the beginning of each semester, for the whole period of their candidature, whether or not they also register for any individual courses each semester. A student who fails to register as a student of the University before the final registration date each semester (normally four weeks after the start of the semester) shall be assumed to have withdrawn from the University and his candidature will be terminated with effect from the start of that semester, except in the following cases:
    1. A student given leave-of absence under Clause 21 is not required to register as a student during the period of approved leave.
    2. A student absent from the University while undertaking an approved course of study overseas (under the Year Abroad Scheme) is not required to register as a student at UBD while overseas.
    3. The final registration date may be extended for individual students or groups of students who are on official duties overseas (e.g. attending Sports Meetings, Science Olympiads etc.) and who are unable to register by the normal final registration date, at the discretion of the Registrar’s Office, at the request of the appropriate Dean.
    4. Students temporarily suspended from the University for any reason are required to register at the start of each semester.
  2. Any student whose candidature at the University has been terminated under Regulation 32 may appeal to the University Examination Board for reinstatement of his candidature, provided that such an appeal is received by the Registrar within three working days of the official release of the main examination results of the semester for which the candidate failed to register.
  3. In addition to registering as a student in the University each semester, candidates are required to register for individual courses at the same time, and to take the prescribed examinations for those courses (Regulation 9). A candidate who passes two-thirds or more of the total number of units for which he is registered in a semester shall be allocated an “Active” registration status for that semester; a candidate who fails to obtain two-thirds of the units for which he is registered shall be allocated a “Probationary” registration status for that semester.
  4. The University Examinations Board shall determine  whether  to permit  a  candidate who has not attained an active registration status to continue as a student of the relevant programme, having regard to the provisions of the Regulations governing the programme  and the following principles laid down by the Senate concerning a candidate’s continuous registration or termination as a student in that particular programme:

For all programmes governed by these regulations, a candidate’s registration as a student in the relevant programme shall be terminated and such a candidate shall be refused re-admission to the programme in the following circumstances (after taking into account the results of any supplementary examinations permitted):
    1. if the candidate has been placed on probationary registration status in any two of the first four semesters; or
    2. if the candidate has failed the same core, basic or Faculty-required course on two occasions. For degree programmes of six or more semesters, this regulation shall only be applicable for first and second year level courses (coded 1XXX or 2XXX) whenever they may be taken. For all other programmes, this regulation shall be applicable to all courses at any level;  or
    3. if the candidate has been on probationary status for two consecutive semesters.
