2.6 First Degree

All first degree programmes are 4 years full-time unless otherwise stated.

General Entry Requirements

The minimum qualification required for entry to the University is two ‘A’ Level passes (equaling 80 points) or equivalent qualifications obtained in a maximum of three sittings within the last three years (2005-2007) OR a Pass in the International Baccalaureate (24 IB points). However, applicants must ALSO satisfy the specific entry requirements for the programme(s) for which they are applying; in most cases these require at least ONE ‘A’ Level pass at grade ‘C’ or better.

And

For English-medium and Bilingual programmes, at least a credit 6 in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level Examination or a grade ‘C’ in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of  6.0 or a TOEFL minimum overall score of 550. Candidates wishing to enroll in a Bachelor of Health Science/Medicine programme and those who wish to take a major course in Teaching English as a Second Language in the B. A. Education programme are required to have at least an IELTS score of 6.5.

For Malay-medium programmes, at least a credit 6 in Bahasa Melayu at GCE ‘O’ Level Examination.

For B.A (Malay medium) and B.A. Major in Brunei Studies programmes, at least a credit 6 in Bahasa Melayu and at least a pass in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level Examination or at IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 5.0.

2.6.1 Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education

Mempunyai kelulusan sekurang-kurangnya Sijil Perguruan Ugama dari Maktab Perguruan Ugama, Negara Brunei Darussalam atau institusi-institusi yang diiktiraf oleh Senat Universiti dan hendaklah mematuhi syarat-syarat kemasukkan untuk ‘Mature Student’. Pengambilan pelajar untuk program ini dihadkan kepada maksimum 20 orang
06	BA (Education) Major either in Geography, Economics, History or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). One minor chosen either from Geography, Economics, History, Mathematics, TESL or Business and Accounting for Teachers.
	a)	A minimum of 140 ‘A’ Level points; one of ‘A’ Level must be in a relevant English medium subject at grade ‘C’ or better. [ A grade ‘C’ or better in Accounting at ‘A’ Level is required for those who wish to take Business and Accounting for Teachers as a minor course ] OR an International Baccalaureate score of 28 points with a minimum of 5 points in a relevant subject at higher level. The ‘A’ Level pass or the relevant International Baccalaureate subject must be from Geography, Economics, History, English Literature or other English medium subject; and
	b)	At least a credit 6 in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level examination for those taking Economics as a major subject and Business and Accounting for Teachers as a minor subject.
08	B.Sc. (Education) Major either in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics. One minor chosen either from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Geography. A minimum of 120 ‘A’ Level points; two of the ‘A’ Level passes must be at grade ‘D’ or better, one of them should be in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics (major) with the other ‘A’ Level pass in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mahematics or Geography (minor) OR an International Baccalaureate score of 28 points with a minimum of 5 points in relevant subject(s) at higher level.
24	B.Ed. (General Science)
	a)	Apart from the general entry requirement, pre-service applicants must satisfy the following: Two ‘A’ Level passes which must be from Biology, Chemistry or Physics, one of which at grade ‘D’ or better and another at grade ‘E’ or better. Candidates must also have obtained four (4) GCE ‘O’ Level credit passes or better, in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
		(i)	A minimum of 100 ‘A’ Level points; the two ‘A’ Level passes must be from Biology, Chemistry or Physics OR an International Baccalaureate score of 24 points, preferably with two of Physics, Chemistry or Biology at higher level; and
		(ii.)	Candidates must also have obtained GCE ‘O’ Level credit passes, or better, in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
	b)	Serving teachers who have at least five years teaching experience in Integrated Science and holders of Certificate in Education obtained from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or other equivalent qualifications will also be considered.
	The student intake for this programme will be a maximum of 25 students.
07	BA (Primary Education)
	a)	A minimum of 140 ‘A’ Level points; one of ‘A’ Level must be an English medium subject at grade ‘C’ or better OR an International Baccalaureate score of 28 points with a minimum of 5 points in relevant subjects at higher level and.
	b)	At least a pass in Mathematics and a science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Combined Science) at GCE ‘O’ Level
	The student intake for this programme will be a maximum of 30 students
35	Sarjana Muda Pendidikan Satu pengkhususan dipilih sama ada dari Pendidikan Jasmani atau Pendidikan Seni Lukis. Calon hendaklah memperolehi kiraan mata minimum sebanyak 160 mata di dalam Peperiksaan Lanjutan GCE ‘A’ Level dan salah satu dari mata pelajaran yang diperolehi mestilah sekurang-kurangnya gred ‘C’ atau lebih baik khususnya dalam subjek Art atau Art and Design bagi pengkhususan Pendidikan Seni Lukis ATAU lulus dalam ujian kecergasan dan kemahiran sukan yang dikendalikan oleh Institut bagi pengkhususan dalam Pendidikan Jasmani. Pengambilan pelajar untuk program ini dihadkan kepada maksimum 60 orang iaitu 30 orang bagi Major dalam Pendidikan Jasmani dan 30 orang bagi Major dalam Pendidikan Seni Lukis.
25	B.Ed. (Primary Education) (3 years full-time) This programme is conducted in English or Malay medium and intended for upgraders / in-service teachers only. (Program ini dikendalikan dalam Bahasa Inggeris atau Melayu dan dikhususkan untuk Guru-Guru yang sedang berkhidmat sahaja).
	a)	For English medium, this programme is specialize on the following :
		Science & Mathematics Education
		Teaching of English as a Second Language
	Applicants must :
	(i)	At least three years experience as a qualified teacher and hold at least one professional development certificate / diploma in the intended area of specialization;
	(ii)	Have been teaching or working in the intended area of specialization for three years within the last five years; and
	(iii)	Have obtained at least a pass in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level Examination for specialization in Science and Mathematics Education.
	(iv)	Have obtained at least a credit six in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level examination or a grade ‘C’ in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL minimum overall score of 550.
	Preference will be given to those who are actively involved in the intended area of specialization in schools of the Ministry of Education.
	b)	Bagi aliran Melayu, pengkhususan program ini ialah:
			Pendidikan Bahasa Melayu
			Pendidikan Awal Kanak-Kanak
			Pendidikan Seni Lukis
			Pendidikan Jasmani
			Pendidikan Khas (diajarkan dalam Bahasa Melayu dan Bahasa English)
	Pemohon hendaklah :
	(i)	Mempunyai sekurang-kurangnya 3 tahun pengalaman mengajar sebagai guru yang berkelayakan dan mempunyai sekurang-kurangnya satu sijil perkembangan profesional / diploma dalam bidang pengkhususan yang bakal diikuti;
	(ii)	Mengajar atau bekerja dalam bidang pengkhususan yang bakal diikuti selama 3 tahun dalam tempoh 5 tahun kebelakangan;
	(iii)	Memperolehi kelulusan sekurang-kurangnya kepujian (credit) 6 atau lebih baik dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Melayu di peringkat GCE ‘O’ Level;
	(iv)	Memperolehi Sijil Pendidikan Awal Kanak-Kanak bagi pengkhususan Pendidikan Awal Kanak-Kanak; ATAU Memperolehi Sijil Pendidikan Khas atau mempunyai pengalaman yang berkaitan serta mencukupi dan sekurang-kurangnya lulus dalam mata pelajaran English Language di peringkat GCE ‘O’ Leval atau skor 5.0 dalam ujian IELTS bagi Pengkhususan Pendidikan Khas;
	(v)	Mempunyai pengalaman yang berkaitan serta mencukupi bagi pengkhususan dalam bidang Pendidikan Khas.
	Keutamaan akan diberikan kepada mereka yang terlibat aktif dalam bidang pengkhususan yang bakal diikuti di sekolah-sekolah di bawah Kementerian Pendidikan.
802	B. Ed. in Primary Education (Modular)
	(Minimum 36 calender months and maximum 60 calender months)
	Applicants must:
	(i)	Have undergone and completed a teacher training programme leading to the award of Certificate in Education or its equivalent from a University of educational institution recognized by the Government of Brunei Darussalam.
	(ii)	Have at least three years of relevant teaching experience in an educational institution recognized by the Government of Brunei Darussalam after completion of the teacher training programme;
	(iii)	Have obtained at least a pass in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level examination; and
	(iv)	Is currently hold a full-time teaching position in school registered with the Ministry of Education.
	Note :  This programme is conducted on a modular basis which requires candidates to attend classes after working hours, during the weekends and school holidays. The tuition fee for this programme is fixed at B$12,000.00. The fee may be payable in 9 installments at a rate of B$1,333.00 at the commencement of each module..
804	B. Ed. in Primary Education (TESL) A minimum of 120 ‘A’ Level points; one of ‘A’ Level must be in a relevant English medium subject at grade ‘C’ or better OR an International Baccalaureate score of 28 points with a minimum of 5 points at higher level in relevant subjects.

Note:

All first degree Education programmes require an interview. To qualify for admission, applicants must be successful at the interview conducted by the University Admission Committee.

2.6.2 Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies

17	Bachelor of Business Administration
	(i)	A minimum of 160 ‘A’ Level points for two ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects OR a minimum of 200 ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects OR an International Baccalaureate score of 30 points; and
	(ii)	At least a pass in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level.
31	BA (Economics)
	(i)	A minimum of 160 A-Level points for two ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects OR a minimum of 200 ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects OR an International Baccalaureate score of 30 points; and
	(ii)	At least a credit six in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level.
41	BA (Accounting and Finance)
	(i)	A minimum of 180 A-Level points for two ‘A’ Level passes OR a minimum of 240 ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes. The ‘A’ Level passes must include at least one from either Accounting, Economics or Mathematics and / or one from other relevant subject(s) OR an International Baccalaureate score of 32 points, and
	(ii)	At least a credit six in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level.

2.6.3 Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

B.A. Major in Bahasa Melayu dan Linguistik, Geography, History, Kesusasteraan Melayu, Sociology-Anthropology or English Language Studies. One minor chosen from Geography, History, English Language Studies, Sociology-Anthropology, South East Asian Studies, Bahasa Melayu dan Linguistik or Kesusasteraan Melayu. Students can also take minor offered by other faculties such as Economics, Mathematics, Policy Studies, Brunei Studies and others. Three subjects are to be taken in the first year. Major and Minor combination to be determined at the end of the first year. A minimum of 160 A-Level points; one of the ‘A’ Level passes must be in a relevant subject at grade ‘C’ or better OR an International Baccalaureate score of 28 points. For Malay-medium programmes, at least a credit 6 in Bahasa Melayu at GCE ‘O’ Level and at least a pass in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level or in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 5.0; or For English-medium and Bilingual programmes, at least a credit 6 in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level or a grade ‘C’ in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL minimum overall score of 550..

2.6.4 Faculty of Science

Only eligible students will be transferred to University of Glasgow. Candidates satisfying the entry requirements will undergo a selection interview (if required).
	A minimum of 160 A-Level points for two ‘A’ Level passes; the two ‘A’ Level passes must be in Physics and Mathematics (excluding Further Mathematics) at grade ‘C’ or better ; OR a minimum of 220 ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes; the ‘A’ Level passes must be in Physics and Mathematics. Further Mathematics can also be considered as the third subjects, with minimum grade ‘D’ or better; OR an International Baccalaureate score of 30 points preferably with a minimum of 5 points in Physics and Mathematics at higher level.
803	Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering
	-	1 year at UBD and 3 years at University of New South Wales full-time. This programme is an articulation programme with the University of New South Wales in Australia. Only eligible students will be transferred to University of New South Wales. Candidates satisfying the entry requirements will undergo a selection of interview (if required).
	A minimum of 240 ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes; the three ‘A’ Level passes must be from Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics (excluding Further Mathematics) at grade ‘C’ or better OR an International Baccalaureate score of 32 points preferably with minimum of 5 points in Physics, Mathematics and/or Chemistry at higher level.

2.6.5 Academy of Brunei Studies

	(i)	A minimum of 160 ‘A’ Level points; one of the ‘A’ Level passes must be in a relevant subject at grade ‘C’ or better; OR an International Baccalaureate score of 28 points; and
	(ii)	At least a credit six in Bahasa Melayu at GCE ‘O’ Level.
	Subjects such as Art, Ulum Hadith, Ulum Al-Quran and Tahfiz Al-Quran are not included under the two ‘A’ Level passes required but these subjects can be considered as a third ‘A’ Level subject..

2.2.6 Institute of Medicine (IM)

800	Bachelor of Health Science / Medicine ( 3 years full-time ) Students have the opportunity to graduate with an internationally recognized double degree. After three years, students will obtain a Bachelor of Health Science (Ord.) from Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Successful students will then qualify to study for a further 2 to 3 years in Medicine and be awarded the MBBS or MD Degree by one of UBD’s partner medical schools in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Entry requirements:
	(i)	A minimum of 300 ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, with only one grade ‘C’ allowed in the combination; OR an Internationally recognized degree of upper second or first class honours in a relevant discipline from University Brunei Darussalam or any other University recognized by the University Senate; OR an International Baccalaureate minimum score of 36 points (accepted subjects will be assessed on case by case basis).
	(ii)	At least a credit six in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level or a grade ‘C’ in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL minimum overall score of 550
	The ‘A’ Level qualifications or its equivalent must be obtained in two sittings within the last three years. Candidates satisfying the entry requirements will undergo a rigorous selection interview process called the Multiple Mini Interview. Admission is not guaranteed and will be competitive.
880	Bachelor of Health Science (Biomedical Sciences) A minimum of 240 ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, with a minimum of three grade ‘C’s OR an International Baccalaureate with a minimum score of 32 points (accepted subjects will be assessed on case by case basis).
