For 2010/2011 Academic Session
Applications are invited from qualified candidates for admission to the programmes listed. To be considered for admission, applicants must satisfy the general entry requirements and specific entry requirements as set for each programme. Applicants must note that fulfilling the general entry requirements and specific entry requirements does not guarantee entry into UBD’s programmes as admission to all programmes is competitive and limited subject to availability of spaces.
In addition, Universiti Brunei Darussalam has introduced a point system for holders of ‘A’ Level qualifications in 2008, in order to assess their suitability for entry to its first degree programmes. Points will be allocated to ‘A’ Level grades according to the following scheme, which is based on that used by the University Colleges Admission Services (UCAS), United Kingdom. Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level qualifications are not awarded points in the UBD scheme and are not taken into account when determining acceptable qualifications for entry to UBD.

GENERAL NOTES
- Universiti Brunei Darussalam reserves the right to reject applications which are incomplete, received after the closing date or contain false information.
- Only shortlisted / successful candidates will be contacted.
- Only qualifications from a University / Institution / Examination Board recognised by the University Senate will be considered.
- For entry to first degree programmes only Brunei-Cambridge GCE 'A' Level qualifications or equivalent qualifications obtained in not more than 3 sittings will be considered, except for entry to first degree programmes offered by the Institute of Medicine where qualifications obtained in not more than 2 sittings will be considered.
- For entry to Diploma in Health Science (Nursing) and Diploma in Health Science (Midwifery) programmes offered by the Institute of Medicine where qualifications obtained in not more than two (2) sittings will be considered.
- Applicants with other equivalent qualifications such as Higher National Diploma (HND) or International Baccalaureate (IB) may be considered subject to their fulfilling the entry requirements set by the degree programmes they have applied for.
- General Paper and English as a Second Language will not be considered as Advanced Level subjects.
- The London GCE ‘O’ Level Malay will not be considered.
- Applicants who do not meet the normal entry requirements may be considered for admission to first degree programmes as mature applicants subject to the requirements set by the University as set out in Section 6.
- Applicants must satisfy other requirements as set by Universiti Brunei Darussalam from time to time.

(GENERAL AND SPECIFIC PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS)
1. PhD Programmes
Currently Ph. D. Programmes are offered by the following institute / faculties:-

General Entry Requirements:
The minimum requirement for Ph. D Programmes is normally a relevant Master’s degree or an Upper Second Class Bachelor’s Degree with Honours or its equivalent from institutions recognized by the University Senate. Applicants are also required to submit a detailed research proposal which is normally expected to include the following topics: proposed title; rationale; aims and methodology; literature review; preliminary bibliography; provisional timetable; provisional table of contents, and an indication of any special requirements for the study. The duration of a Ph. D. programme is normally 3 to 5 years full-time or 5 to 7 years part-time.
Note:Interested applicants are advised to consult relevant department in the Faculty / Institute before making a formal
application. Application must be submitted to the University during the specified period.
2. Master Degree
General Entry Requirements:
The minimum requirement for Master Degree Programmes is normally a relevant Bachelor’s Degree with Honours (Second Class and above) or its equivalent from institutions recognised by the University Senate unless otherwise stated.
Applicants who do not posses a Second Class Honours Degree may be considered, provided they have relevant working experience and posses other academic or professional qualifications deemed suitable and equivalent for the purpose of admission to the programme.
For entry to English medium masters degree programmes, applicants must be able to show English Language proficiency and those who do not have an English medium undergraduate degree qualification must normally have at least a credit 6 in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level Examination or a grade ‘C’ in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL minimum overall score of at least 550. Please take note that other specific entry requirements will be provided under the separate programmes.
2.1 Master Programmes by Research

In addition to the general entry requirement, applicants for MBA programme must also have minimum 3 years relevant managerial working experience. - Institute of Medicine (IM)
- Master of Public Health (12 months full-time or 24 months part-time)
First degree in medicine (MBBS or MD) or in other healthcare-related fields such as first degree in Nursing, Nutrition and other Allied Health Sciences (considerations may also be given to candidates with public health field experience and relevant professional qualifications on a case to case basis) - Master of Science Primary Health Care (3 years part-time)
- Hold a Primary Medical Degree : MBBS or its equivalent, recognized by the Brunei Medical Board (BMB);
- Hold a license / Registered to practice medicine in Brunei Darussalam or a recognised post in other countries; and
- Has a minimum of twelve (12) months post-qualification clinical experience e.g. completion of the pre-registration year.
- Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE)
- Master of Teaching (1½ years full-time or 2 ½ years part-time)
- Master of Teaching programme requires an IELTS score of 6.5 OR TOEFL minimum overall score of at least 600 OR completion of an English medium undergraduate degree.
- For the Secondary and Vocational and Technical Education streams, the applicant’s undergraduate studies must be relevant to the choice of subject specialisation(s);
- Applicants shall be required o undergo such additional test(s) and/or interviews as the Faculty may determine to assess the candidate’s ability to pursue the programme
- Master of Education/ Sarjana Pendidikan (January 2011 intake)

- Applications for admission to the programme must have: -
- At least a second class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with a significant educational component (such as Bachelor of Arts Education, Bachelor of Science Education, Bachelor of Education) from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or any other university or institution recognized by the Senate; OR
- At least a second class Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area awarded by Universiti Brunei Darusslam or any other university or institution recognized by the Senate AND a Postgraduate Certificate of Education or professional teaching qualification recognized by the Senate;
- Applicants should have at least two years of teaching and/or relevant professional experience approved by the Senate;
- Applicants for admission to the programme must demonstrate a high level of language proficiency and must satisfy the following condition: -
- Those applying for English-medium Master of Education (M. Ed.) programmes should have completed his/her Bachelor’s Degree programme in the English medium. Those who do not satisfy this requirement should have at least an IELTS score of 6.5 Or a TOEFL minimum overall score of 600;
- Those applying for the Malay-medium M. Ed. programmes (Sarjana Pendidikan) should have completed his/her Bachelor’s Degree programme in the Malay medium. Those who do not satisfy this requirement should have at least a credit 6 in Malay Language in the GCE ‘O’ Level examinations.
- Applicants shall be required to undergo such additional test(s) and/or interview(s) as the Institute may determine to assess their ability to pursue the programme to which they are seeking admission.
- All Master programmes offered by FASS and FOS are either 1 or 2 years full-time; OR 2 or 4 years part-time except for master programmes offered by SHBIE and FBEPS.
- Some Masters programmes may require an interview before final selection is made.
To qualify for admission, applicants must be successful at the interview conducted by the respective Faculties.

3. Generation Next Programme
UBD offers four undergraduate honours degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Health Science and Bachelor of Business.
Each of these degrees provides a range of pathways, giving you more flexibility in your choice of career. They have been designed to prepare you for a competitive world, where adaptability and innovation are essential for successful scientific, economic and social development. These degrees will develop a broad knowledge across the chosen subject areas, while ensuring the transfer of sufficient skills to prepare you for professional practice or further study. To foster an understanding of international standards, you will be encouraged to complete part of your degree in another country, or to gain work experience in a relevant context.
Each undergraduate degree programme will allow students to choose from variety of major disciplines, enhanced by electives that will provide critical, analytical, theoretical and practical perspectives on the major discipline. And at UBD you’ll benefit from the low student to lecturer ratio and the high caliber of the teaching staff, many of whom have been recruited internationally.

General Entry Requirements:
For English-medium and Bilingual programmes, at least a credit 6 in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level Examination or a grade ‘C’ in IGCSE English (as a Second Language) or an IELTS score of 6.0 or a TOEFL minimum overall score of 550. Candidates wishing to enroll in a Bachelor of Health Science programme with major in Medicine are required to have at least an IELTS score of 6.5.
3.1 Bachelor of Arts
The Bachelor of Arts degree is flexible and provides its graduates with career opportunities in such diverse fields as the media, publishing, art, communication, surveying, teaching and government service.
The Study Abroad Programme and various internships, coupled with the emphasis that will be given to communication skills and innovative thinking will ensure that graduates from this programme are well prepared for whatever career they choose to follow.
With a range of major subjects including Geography, History Studies, Sociology-Anthropology, English Language, English Literature, Malay Language, Malay Literature, Brunei Studies, Art & Design, Communication & Media and Environmental Studies, this programme requires the following qualifications :
- 160 points for two ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects; or
- 200 points for three ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects; or
- An International Baccalaureate score of 28 points;
- Subjects such as Ulum Hadith, Ulum Al-Quran and Tahfiz Al-Quran can be considered as a third ‘A’ Level subject; and
- At least a credit six in Bahasa Melayu at Brunei Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level FOR candidates wishing to major in Brunei Studies, Malay Language and Linguistics and Malay Literature.
3.2 Bachelor of Health Science
The Bachelor of Health Science is a programme designed for you to attain the necessary core clinical, biomedical and scientific expertise with interprofessional emphasis. You will gain clinical and/or laboratory exposure and experience while engaging in breadth courses that will provide you with critical analytical and methodological tools together with adaptable skills and attitude you’ll need to become a lifelong partner.
Minimum Entry Requirements:
3.2.1 Bachelor of Health Science (Medicine) (Ord) *
- 300 points for three ‘A’ Level passes (must be from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics) with a minimum of three grade B’s ; or
- An Internationally recognized degree of upper second or first class honours in a relevant discipline from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or any other university recognized by the University Senate; or
- An International Baccalaureate with a score of 36 points.
Note:The Bachelor of Health Science (Medicine) programme is a 3 years full-time programmes whereby the students have the opportunity to graduate with an
internationally recognized double degree. After three years, students will obtain a Bachelor of Health Science (Ord.) from Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Successful students will then qualify to study for a further three years in Medicine and be awarded the MBBS or MD Degree by one of UBD’s partner medical
schools in the United Kingdom and Australia.
3.2.2 Bachelor of Health Science (Biomedical Sciences) (Hons) *
- 240 points for three ‘A’ Level passes (must be from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics) with a minimum of three grade ‘C’s ; or
- An International Baccalaureate with score of 32 points.
3.2.3 Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing or Midwifery) (Hons) *
- 240 points for three ‘A’ Level passes (must be from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics) with only one grade ‘D’ allowed in the combinations ; or
- An internationally recognized degree of second class honours in a relevant discipline from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or any other university recognized by the University Senate ; or
- A basic Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery with several merits and no resits.
- An International Baccalaureate with a score of 32 points.
*Please note that candidates satisfying the entry requirements will have to undergo a selection interview process known as the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).
3.3 Bachelor of Science (Hons)
The Bachelor of Science degree programme provides you with a broad science background, and at the same time the opportunity to major in areas of your interest like, Applied Physics, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Fundamental Mathematics and Statistics, Operations Research & Financial Mathematics. It also gives you flexibility in career choices. You can enter disciplines like medicine, engineering, finance or management or pursue advanced training in sciences and mathematics, skills that are highly prized by the engineering and financial sectors.
Minimum Entry Requirements:
3.3.1 Bachelor of Science
- 160 points for two ‘A’ Level passes including at least one of the following subjects : Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics; or
- 200 points for three ‘A’ Level passes including at least one of the following subjects : Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics; or
- An International Baccalaureate score of 28 points with minimum of 5 points in relevant subjects at higher level.
3.3.2 Bachelor of Science (Physical Education and Sport) **
- 160 points for two ‘A’ Level passes (one of the ‘A’ Level must be an English medium subject at grade ‘C’ or better); or
- An International Baccalaureate with a score of 30 points with a minimum of 5 points in relevant subjects.
- Have obtained at least 5 GCE ‘O’ Level credit passes or equivalent including English, Bahasa Melayu and a Science subject.
- Must be successful at an interview conducted by the University Admission Committee and pass Fitness and Skilled Assessment conducted by UBD; and
- Must have shown active participation in physical education, through sports or extra curricular activities, based on certificate or participation / accreditation or testimonial letters from the school or various sport bodies.
*This is a jointly delivered programme. Your 1st and 4th years of study will be at UBD while your 2nd and 3rd years of study will be at University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, UK
(UWIC).
3.4 Bachelor of Business (Hons)
The Bachelor of Business degree programme offers you a variety of majors that will equip you with the skills to succeed in a competitive world. With such skills, you’ll be qualified for employment in both the private and public sectors. The Bachelor of Business (Hons) will allow you to major in Business Administration, Economics or Accounting and Finance*, coupled with courses in governance and enterprise. You can also extend your knowledge in different disciplinary areas, including languages.
Minimum Entry Requirements:
- 160 points for two ‘A’ Level points for two ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects ; or
- 200 points for three ‘A’ Level points for three ‘A’ Level passes in relevant subjects; or
- An International Baccalaureate score of 28 points; and
- At least a credit 6 in Mathematics at GCE ‘O’ Level or a grade ‘C’ in GCSE Mathematics.
*In order to major in Accounting and Finance, students must have a GPA of 3.5 in their 1st year of study.
4. DIPLOMA LEPASAN IJAZAH
Diploma Kaunseling Lepasan Ijazah (1 tahun sepenuh masa) dan terdapat dua jenis program yang ditawarkan:
4.1 Diploma Kaunseling Lepasan Ijazah untuk Guru / Pegawai Pelajaran
- Mempunyai sekurang-kurangnya Ijazah Sarjana Muda dari Universiti Brunei Darussalam atau Universiti lain yang diiktiraf oleh Senat Universiti; dan
- Mempunyai sekurang-kurangnya tiga tahun pengalaman mengajar.
4.2 Diploma Kaunseling Lepasan Ijazah untuk Pegawai Sektor Awam / Swasta / Bukan Guru Terlatih
Mempunyai sekurang-kurangnya Ijazah Sarjana Muda dari Universiti Brunei Darussalam atau Universiti lain yang diiktiraf oleh Senat Universiti. Keutamaan akan diberi kepada pemohon-pemohon yang mempunyai pengalaman mengajar / kerja dalam pembangunan sumber tenaga manusia atau kerja sosial.
Note:Pemohon yang memenuhi syarat-syarat untuk mengikuti program Diploma Kaunseling dikehendaki menghadiri temuduga. Keputusan penerimaan untuk mengikuti
program / kursus ini adalah tertakluk kepada hasil temuduga
5. ADVANCED DIPLOMA AND DIPLOMA
5.1 Advanced Diploma in Nursing / Midwifery
- A Basic Diploma of Nursing or Midwifery or equivalent
- Applicants must have at least 3 years of work experience following completion of the Basic Diploma in Nursing or Midwifery with at least one year of working experience in the area that they intend to specialise.
5.2 Diploma in Health Science (Nursing) - (3 year full-time)
- Have at least 5 credit passes in GCE ‘O’ Level examination, or equivalent examination, including Mathematics, Science, English and Bahasa Melayu; or
- A recognized Certificate for Assistant Nurse or Certificate in Nursing with working experience of not less than 2 years since completing the certificate programme.
5.3 Diploma in Health Science (Midwifery) - (3 year full-time)
- Have at least 5 credit passes in GCE ‘O’ Level examination, or equivalent examination, including Mathematics, Science, English and Bahasa Melayu; or
- A recognised Certificate for Assistant Nurse or Certificate in Nursing/Midwifery (level 2) with working experience of not less than 2 years since completing the certificate programme.
Note:All diploma programmes require an interview. To qualify for admission, applicants must be successful at the interview conducted by the University Admission
Committee.
6. MATURE APPLICANTS
The Senate Admissions Committee may admit an applicant to a first degree programme of the University as a mature applicant if the candidate:
- is at least 25 years of age on the date of his admission to the degree programme;
- taken the Brunei-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examination or equivalent examination and normally has taken the GCE 'A' Level or equivalent examination and has obtained at least one ‘A' Level pass or equivalent in a subject which is relevant to the degree programme to which admission is sought.
