MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PETROLEUM GEOSCIENCE
GOALS:
- To train petroleum exploration and production geologists and geophysicists.
- To develop the skills required for employment in the petroleum industry.
- To provide a broad practical and theoretical training in Reservoir Geology, Geophysics, Exploration Geology and Basin Studies.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURES:
- An intensive 12 month programme, from late August of the year of entry.
- A focus on the petroleum geology of the South East Asia region.
- Courses are taught by a mixture of UBD petroleum geoscience staff, experts from universities around the world and the oil & gas industry.
- Training in the use of technical computer software. Students become proficient in interpreting 3D seismic data and well log analysis.
- Be part of growing geoscience student community at UBD.
- International standards are maintained by an academic assessor, from a leading university, who reviews the course each year.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE:
- Taught courses in Reservoir Sedimentology, Geophysics, Tectonics and Structural Geology, Well log Analysis, Reservoir Characterization, Reservoir Modelling, Sequence Stratigraphy, Geochemistry, Biostratigraphy, Petroleum Exploration and Seismic Interpretation.
- Class projects in Prospect Assessment and Oil & Gas Field studies.
- A field course on the petroleum geology of Northwest Borneo.
- A 4 month independent research project.
A maximum enrolment of 15 students will be admitted per year. This is to ensure a low student to staff ratio and a high standard of supervision.
FACILITIES:
- Workstations for seismic interpretation, reservoir modeling, etc, consist of 3 suns and 4 pc’s. Also standard computing facilities are available such as printers, plotter and digitising table.
- Field equipment consists of a 4 wheel drive vehicle, portable mini-permeameter, gamma ray scintillameter and coring machine.
