Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Institute of Islamic
Studies (SHOAS IIS) is one of the six faculties
of the Unviersiti Brunei Darussalam. The establishment
of the Institute was announced with the consent
of
His Majesty Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka
Seri Baginda Sultan dan Yang DiPertuan Negara
Brunei Darussalam,
on 1st Muharram 1420 A.H. corresponding to 17th
April 1999 A.C. It was established as a result
of amalagamation
of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universiti Brunei
Darussalam and the Institute of Islamic Studies,
Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Having Islam as its official religion and Malay
Islamic Monarchy its philosopy, Negara Brunei Darussalam
has established this Institute as a centre of learning
so that the religion of Islam in the country be practised
accor to Mazhab Shafie of Ahlis Sunnah Wal Jamaah.
It is expected that the needs of the country and
the Islamic Society in this region will be met by
the course contents of Islamic Studies and the Arabic
Language prepared by the above Institute.

In order to achieve this end, the Institute
will run the academic programmes to produce therequired graduates.
In addition to introducing new programmes, the Institute will
also continue running the old programes being run by the Faculty
of Islamic Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam until its
completion and phasing out. The Institute will also continue
co-operating other faculties in offering courses of Islamic
Studies and shall be receving co-operation from other faculties
for courses other than Islamic Studies.

As an Institute devoted to the study of Islamic Studies
Subjects in this country where Islam is an official state
religions,
it has three missions:

to engage actively in determining
the place of Islam as official religion of the state
and the religion of majority
of its inhabitants.

Te develop, upgrade and enlarge
the level of Islamic learning in the country and
in the region.

To promote understanding of Islamic
teaching in the community enabling them to adopt Islamic
principles
in their ways of
life.
objectives
In order to fulfil the above mission, the Institute has
the following objectives:

To raise the level of learning and
study of Islamic Studies upto degree and post graduate
level to lay a foundation for
the development of Islamic Studies in Negara Brunei
Darussalam and preserving its identity as continuation
of achieving
the goal of the former faculty of Islamic Studies
and the former IPI.

To safeguard the importance of religion,
nation and the country in future.

To give understanding
and meaning to the philisophy of Negara Brunei
Darussalam, meaning Malay Islamic
Monarchy, especially
in the contex of Islam as the basis and
foundation of theabove philisophy.

To ascertain that
the products of the institute are educated, practical
and virtuous, possessing
good moral through education
and exemplory conduct in conducive
atmosphere.

To produce well educated, highly
respected muslim intellectuals and Islamic Scholars
who are custodians of Aqidah Ahli
Sunnah
Wal Jamaah and who can implement
Islamic law
based on the understanding of Mazhab
Shafie and

To become a centre of
Islamic learning and Higher studies on Islam in
Brunei Darussalam in particular
and in South
East Asia generally.
structure of the
Institute
The Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Institute of Islamic
Studies is headed by Dean, the Deputy Dean, Heads
of Departments, programme co-ordinators, teachers,
Assistant Registar and
supporting administrative staff.
At present the Institute has the following three departments:
- Department of Shariah
- Department of Usuluddin
- Department of Arabic Language
Each department is headed by a Head of department appointed
from among the lecturers. They are responsible
for running their respective departments and helping
the Dean and the
Deputy Dean in running the Institute.
