Students will graduate with an internationally recognised double degree, first with Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) Ordinary Degree, after three years from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Successful students will then qualify to study for a further up to three years of clinical education to gain the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and/or MD at one of the UBD’s Partner Medical Schools either in the United Kingdom, Canada or Australia.
The BHSc/Medicine programme at UBD is student-centred, concentrating on learning rather than teaching. Self-directed learning and problem-based learning are used throughout the curriculum. The programme has four themes running throughout the three years: (i) Health Sciences consisting of basic and clinical science; (ii) Patient Care consisting of the clinical and communication skills and behaviour necessary for a good patient-doctor relationship; (iii) Our Community comprising community and population medicine and (iv) Personal and Professional Development which covers Islamic Medicine, Malay Islam Beraja (MIB) Philosophy, medical law and ethics, and evidence-based medicine. Learning is patient-orientated from day 1 of the programme. Students will also gain practical skills in the well equipped clinical and communication skills centre, health centres and in the community. All students are required to learn the same core material, but have the opportunity to undertake in-depth studies in areas chosen by them (Special Study Modules). Traditional disciplines of physiology, anatomy, biochemistry and pharmacology are taught in an integrated and interactive manner supported by lectures, large group sessions, and expert forum.
