This is a 4-year programme leading to an Honours’ degree. The first year is a common foundation year giving students the opportunity to take part in shared learning with students from other healthcare disciplines together with some discipline-specific education. In the second and third years there will be more focused studies covering a range of scientific subjects including: biotechnology and bioinformatics, biochemistry, human genetics, microbiology, molecular and cell biology, pathological basis of disease, physiology, laboratory instrumentation and management. Finally, in the fourth year students will carry out a full time research project or work in a placement at a professional science laboratory.
Students will be taught by a team of academic staff, including lecturers and professors. These people have gained international reputations in their chosen scientific research fields and are the authors of many publications. The teaching methods will include a number of innovative techniques surrounding problem-based and small group learning, which will be supported by lectures, tutorials, practical classes, self-directed learning and expert forums.
Graduates of the programme will be able to find employment in academic and research institutions, diagnostic laboratories in hospitals, government agencies for health, agriculture and fisheries, and pharmaceutical companies both locally and internationally. Alternatively, students could continue their studies and work towards a higher degree.
