In the undergraduate degree programmes, FBEPS students may also choose to minor or specialize in Human Resource Management, Islamic Banking and Finance, Business Information Systems, Accounting and Finance, Economics or Public Policy and Administration offered in the Faculty. Furthermore, selected Faculty students are given the opportunity to spend one or two semesters at an overseas university under UBD’s Study Abroad Programme.
The undergraduate programmes consist of a series of inter-related courses designed to prepare students for careers in government, public service, commerce and business. The courses offered have two major objectives - educational and vocational. The educational objective is to assist students to develop intellectually and personally through the study and experience of a range of relevant disciplines. This will help them to contribute to a society in which modern work organizations and increasingly complex international relationships will play an increasingly important role, and to understand the relationship between government, business enterprises and the community. The vocational objective is to provide students with knowledge and skills which will allow them to enter and pursue their chosen occupations effectively. The University and the Faculty have, from the beginning, recognized and endorsed the importance of education and training in specialized sub-fields of business, economics, policy and administrative studies to the development of Negara Brunei Darussalam. The undergraduate programmes have been designed to allow for this kind of specialization.
The Faculty’s PhD programme is supported by academic staffs who are highly experienced, with a broad range of interest and research, and who are also well-published in journals and books, both locally and internationally. Candidates enrolled in the Faculty’s PhD programme will receive doctoral training comparable to universities overseas, which will focus on developing research skills together with in-depth study into the candidate’s area of specialization.
The Master of Business Administration provides both the private and public sector manager with opportunities to develop their management skills. The Master of Islamic Banking and Finance programme is to provide students with a sound understanding of the concepts and practices of Islamic banking and finance, both locally and globally. The Master of Arts in Economics (by research) allows candidates to pursue original research on an approved topic with the aim of developing in-depth knowledge in a specialist area. The Master of Arts in Economics (by coursework) is designed to equip students with up to date tools and skills both in theory application and quantitative methods that are required by an economist working either in the private or public sector. The Master of Public Policy programme provides opportunities for the study and analysis of public policy and public sector management, together with specialist courses and a case study related to students' particular field of interest or work. The Master of Environmental Management programme serves to provide an understanding of environmental problems, their causes and solution, through an understanding of the scientific, socio-economic and political backgrounds. The Master of Health Policy and Management programme provides students with the knowledge and skill base to tackle the changing environment of policy, financing and management in national health systems and at the operational level.
In addition to their role in teaching and research, staffs of the Faculty are increasingly engaged in consultancy and in-service and continuing education courses of various types. The Faculty also seeks to contribute in other ways to the development of Negara Brunei Darussalam such as through seminars, conferences and publications.
All of these roles can be facilitated and enhanced by regular and frequent contact with government and private enterprises, and it is the policy of the Faculty to forge and maintain strong links with outside organizations in both domains. It is for this purpose that the University established an Advisory Committee for the Faculty with the Vice-Chancellor as its Chairman and other members drawn from both the government and private sectors.
In summary, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies strives to provide a rich learning environment for future generations of public and private sector managers and analysts, and policy makers of public and private organization in Negara Brunei Darussalam, and also an accessible source of professional knowledge and expertise for the community.
