The Department of English Language
and Applied Linguistics forms part of the Faculty
of Arts and Social Sciences in the University of
Brunei Darussalam. The Department is involved in
a wide range of teaching and research activities.
The main aims of these activities are to improve
the English language proficiency of the undergraduate
population, and to produce effective teachers of
English for Brunei's secondary schools.
During the formative years of
the University, the Department's main concern was
to improve the English proficiency of the University's
undergraduates so as to enable them to gain maximum
benefit from their studies. In recent years, the
scope of the Department's teaching activities has
developed considerably and now includes a wide
range of courses in applied linguistics. These
courses provide practicing and prospective teachers
of English with an understanding of modern English
form and function, and show the relevance of linguistics
to the day-to-day teaching of English in local
classrooms. Following the consolidation of the
undergraduate programmes, the Department now offers
two MA programmes in Applied Linguistics.
