History
The establishment of Academy of
Brunei Studies was announced by His Majesty the Sultan
and Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam after
his consent (titah perkenan) during His 44th Birthday
Celebration Speech in Daerah Tutong on Tuesday, 17th
July, 1990. The Academy will act as a center of study
of all aspects of Brunei's life which is in line with
its rich tradition and history that are known by all
Bruneians by utilizing the existing experts in several
fields of studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam in
cooperation with local scientists and intellectuals.
These fields include Language, Religion, Literature,
History, Culture, Economics, Education, Management,
Public Policy, Natural Science and Geography.

telah juga memperkenankan penubuhan Akademi Pengajian
Brunei di Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Akademi
ini akan menjalankan pengajian dan penyelidikan
yang berkaitan dengan semua aspek kehidupan Negara
Brunei Darussalam.
Usaha mencapai objektif-objektifnya
adalah diharapkan jabatan-jabatan seperti Pusat
Sejarah, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Pusat Dawah
Islamiah, Adat Istiadat Negara dan lain-lain
agensi akan dapat bekerjasama dengan Universiti
Brunei Darussalam dalam bidang yang bermanfaat
ini.
Dengan cara ini beta yakin
pengajian dan penyelidikan tentang kehidupan
Negara Brunei Darussalam yang pengajian dan pengkajian
belum begitu luas dan mendalam itu akan dapat
digerakkan dengan menggunakan sumber-sumber yang
begitu lumayan terutama sekali dari segi sumber-sumber
tradisi dan sejarah yang sedia diketahui oleh
rakyat dan penduduk Negara Brunei Darussalam
yang arif.
Beta seterusnya percaya akademi
ini insya-Allah akan dapat menyempurnakan tugas-tugasnya
dengan baik memandang kepada terdapatnya beberapa
pakar dalam berbagai bidang di Universiti Brunei
Darussalam yang boleh berganding bahu dengan
cerdik pandai tempatan dalam bidang yang berkenaan
ini."

Objectives
The Objectives of the Academy are as follows:
-
to organize and conduct undergraduate
programmes in Brunei Studies;
-
to organize and conduct courses on
Malay Islam Monarchy (Melayu Islam Beraja - M. I. B.)
in the university and other organizations outside the
university;
-
to act as the Secretariat of the National
Supreme Council of Malay Islam Monarchy (Majlis Tertinggi
Kebangsaan Melayu Islam Beraja);
-
to plan and conduct research in all
aspects of Brunei Studies including M.I.B.;
-
to offer continuing educational programmes
in Brunei Studies for the public;
-
to establish a comprehensive collection
of literature, writings, manuscripts, articles, books
and publications on Brunei Darussalam;
-
to publish research reports and documents
to the public;
-
to work closely with Government Institutions
and Agencies such as History Centre, Museums Department,
Language and Literature Bureau, Islamic Propagation
Centre, Department of Adat Istiadat Negara on matters
relevant to Brunei Studies;
-
to establish close working relations
with similar academies, agencies and institutions outside
Brunei Darussalam;
-
to offer (in future), post graduate
programme in Brunei Studies.
Organizational Structure
The Academy of Brunei Studies is headed
by a Director whose rank is equivalent to the Dean of a
Faculty. The Academy has 4 divisions, namely:
Functions
Each Division is responsible for preparing
and executing short and long term plans, in close cooperation
with other Divisions.
Secretariat
of the National Supreme Council of Malay Islam Monarchy
Secretariat of the National Supreme Council
of Malay Islam Monarchy has the following functions:
-
to manage administrative work of the
National Supreme Council of Malay Islam Monarchy and
other committees on M.I.B.
-
to coordinate and supervise lectures
and public talks on M.I.B. at the university and outside
university;
-
to edit articles on Brunei written
by the University academic staffs prior to presentation
or publication; and
- to coordinate interpretation of the
statements of M.I.B. as the national philosophy.
Teaching Division
The functions of Teaching Division are
as follows:
-
to develop the course content of M.I.B.
and to conduct it as a university required course;
-
to conduct a BA Programme major in
Brunei Studies and other programmes;
-
to collect and compile teaching materials,
particularly on M.I.B.;
-
to establish cooperations and coordination
with other Faculties/Departments in conducting joint
courses;
-
to invite foreign scholars to conduct
courses in areas needed;
-
to cooperate with Secretariat of the
National Supreme Council of Malay Islam Monarchy in
delivering talks and courses on M.I.B. to other agencies;
-
to cooperate with Research Division
in identifying needs and areas of priority; and
- to cooperate with Documentation and
Publication Division in accumulating Brunei Collection
and obtaining teaching materials.
Research Division
The functions of Research Division are:
-
to identify, plan, carry out and evaluate
research projects related to Brunei Studies;
-
to assure coordination between foreign
and local researchers in conducting research in Brunei
Studies;
-
to conduct collaborated research projects
on Brunei Studies with foreign and local institutions;
-
to invite local and foreign applicants
to become research fellows of the Academy to carry
out research on areas in Brunei Studies; and
- to assist Documentation and Publication
Division in securing and collecting materials in Brunei
Studies.
Documentation and Publication Division
The functions of this Division are:-
-
to publish books, articles, brochures
and leaflets related to Brunei Studies including M.I.B.;
-
to publish research reports, readings,
annual reports and other important writings related
to Brunei Studies;
-
to collect and record local materials,
letters manuscripts and oral tradition materials related
to Brunei Studies; and
-
to conduct seminars, workshop, forums,
and exhibitions in line with the functions of the Academy.
