B.A. Major in Brunei Studies

Introduction

Academy of Brunei Studies (ABS) for the first time has introduced a programme on B.A. Major in Brunei Studies with effect from 1997/1998 academic year.

This programmeThis programme is introduced in line with the functions of ABS to activate research and study on all aspects of life in Brunei Darussalam in view of the fact that Brunei Darussalam is indeed very rich in traditional and historical resources which have to be explored with assistance of experts in various fields of study at UBD such as Language, Religion, Literature, History, Culture, Economics, Education, Management, Public Policy, Sciences and Geography, also with the cooperation of local experts.

The objectives of the Programme

This programme aims to produce graduates who have dept knowledge in the aspects of Brunei Studies as well as the national philosophy - Malay Islam Monarchy which would enable them to contribute meaningfully and effectively to the advancement of Brunei Darussalam. It is the aim of the Academy to produce not only knowledgeable but also skillful and qualified administrators, public relation officers, teachers, researchers for the government ministries and departments and private sectors.

Medium of Instruction

Most of the courses in this programme are conducted in bahasa Melayu and the rest are in English Language.

Duration of Programme

The programme is run for a period of four years (eight semesters). The maximum period for completing the programme is twelve semesters provided that the Senate may prescribe a lesser period for a candidate who is admitted under regulation 4.

University and Academy Required Courses

This component comprises the following courses which are taken in year I and II and carries a total of 16 units:

Asas Pengajian Brunei - 4 units
Melayu Islam Beraja - 4 units
English Language - 8 units

Basic Major and Minor Courses

Students of this programme will take three major courses in year I. They are Manusia, Masyarakat dan Budaya (4 units) State and Society (4 units) dan Statistik Asas (2 units). In addition, the students are expected to take a 4-unit basic minor course and one or two minor courses offered by any department under Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences also in year I. Other minor courses will be taken in year II and III when next offered by the departments concerned. The total minimum of 21 units for minor courses accumulated throughout the course of study is required (a minimum of 7 units per year).

Major Courses

Major courses comprising of 22 courses carries a total of 80 units.

Minor Courses in Brunei Studies

Students following other academic programmes and selecting Brunei Studies as their minor subject area, can take courses which are offered by the Academy as listed below:

Students selecting Brunei Studies as their minor subject area are required to take a 4 unit basic minor course called "Asas Pengajian Brunei" before proceeding to take other courses.

Academic Exercise

Every student is required to produce an academic exercise either in Malay or English language on any topic related to Brunei. The academic exercise carries 8 units value. s).

Elective Courses

Students whose accumulated credit units are insufficient for graduation and need additional credit units can take elective course(s) as listed below:

AB 4301: Persanakan.
AB -----  : Ethnicity.
AB -----  : Sociology of Nation Building Brunei.
AB 4203: Political Sociology.
