“Art is like light,” a famous composer once said. “Everybody knows what it is but few can tell what it is.”
We intend to teach you what ART is by learning about ART.
Why study Art?
For the potential student, the range of options within art and design is breathtaking, both in the breadth of possibilities and as a potential career. The creative industries are a burgeoning sector of the global economy.
An attractive aspect of embarking on the course in art and design is that the choices start broad and narrow down into specialist interests as skills, enthusiasm and opportunities develop.
The fundamental link between the thousands of the jobs in art and design has a huge, but not always realized, impact on everyday life. One of the aims of pop artists like Andy Warhol was the show that objects we use without a second thought, like Coca Cola bottles, or tins of Heinz baked beans, are in fact, fine products of art and design. Whether it be the car we drive, the film, plays or television we watch, the household goods we used, or many of the other facets of the life at the millennium, all are products of art and design.
It is difficult to imagine a world devoid of such creative impact, yet the image of the artist as an impoverished “man apart” generally persists and contributes to the reluctance of some parents to encourage their offspring to seek careers in thus area. Althought such attitudes are well intentioned, they are far off the mark in a time of rapid change when the idea of a “job for life” is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Increasingly, the emphasis is on the kind sustainable and transferable skills that are the pre-requisite for the wide range careers in art and design.
