Format for New Course Outline

TITLE

Department:    Course Code:

Can be suggested but will be formalised by DR (A)

Course Title:
Programme: Should include all programmes for which the course will be offered.
Type of Course: Should be specified. However, a course may be Core for one programme but an Option or an Elective for a different programme. A course can only have one code.  The definitions of the different types of courses - Core, Elective, Option etc. will be prepared separately by APMC.
Year: This may vary according to the programme and whether it is a Core or Elective etc. The Year should be based on the level at which the course is taught, not when a particular course is taken.
Units: Should follow Faculty Definition.
1-unit courses are not permitted.
Contact Hours: Should be specified as per week rather than as total number of hours – this can then be checked against the Faculty Definition of a unit.
Prerequisite(s): Defined as courses that must be passed before the proposed course can be attempted.
Lecturer(s) / Coordinator:

This is included to make sure that staff are available to teach the course; specific names should be inserted whenever possible.

Aims / Objectives / Rationale: Should be short and place the course in the context of the programme(s).
Course Content: Should provide sufficient information for someone reading the outline to understand the contents of the course. Should not be done as a lecture by lecture summary, or as a simple list.
Assessment: Examination:

%  the number & duration of examinations should be included
(e.g. comprising one three-hour paper)

Course Work: % - the type of assessment should be included (e.g. comprising essays & tests) but the number of these should not be included.
Textbook(s) / References: Suggest that these should be in alphabetical order and should be split, with Textbooks being restricted to those books that students are expected to purchase, and References being limited to a maximum of 4 books. It should not be necessary to have both, or even either, in the Course Outline, if the course does not need them. Staff should not list their own books as Textbooks as this may be interpreted as trying to make students buy them. Referencing should use the APA citation style.
